GMV and the Copernicus Project

Cloud infrastructure for processing satellite data at scale

GMV is enhancing the accuracy of the European Space Agency’s Copernicus project through a cloud infrastructure that eliminates hardware management times and maximises bandwidth.

Fondo de forma abstracta

Aerospace engineering across five continents

With over 35 years’ experience and a team of 2,000 professionals, GMV is a leading Spanish multinational in sectors such as defence, cybersecurity and aerospace. Its partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA) establishes the company as a centre of excellence in orbital mechanics. It currently plays a key role in international space operations.

The Copernicus Project: monitoring the Earth from space

GMV leads the processing of satellite data for the Copernicus Project, an initiative by the European Union and the ESA to monitor our planet. Its work focuses on calculating the orbits of three types of critical satellites. This constant flow of scientific data and GPS signals requires an infrastructure capable of processing and downloading massive volumes of information without interruption.

Three types of critical satellites
  • Sentinel-1: Equipped with radar to capture day and night images, vital for responding to disasters such as floods or earthquakes.
  • Sentinel-2: Captures visual images for monitoring forests, rivers and natural areas.
  • Sentinel-3: Specialised in monitoring the oceans, measuring their height and colour.

This constant flow of scientific data and GPS signals requires an infrastructure capable of processing and downloading massive volumes of information without interruption.

The agility of cloud infrastructure versus the inflexibility of traditional hardware

Before migrating to the Gigas cloud, upgrading the physical infrastructure involved a planning, procurement and configuration process that could take up to a year. The transition to the cloud model has transformed GMV’s operations.

Eliminating waiting times

The management of physical hardware has been replaced by instant resource provisioning.

Icono ancho de banda

High-performance bandwidth

Crucial for the daily reception of gigabytes of satellite data that must be processed in real time.

Icono escalabilidad en caliente

Hot scaling

Complete flexibility to scale up or down CPU, memory and storage capacity according to the requirements of each phase of the project.

Jaime Fernandez Sánchez

Head of the Aerospace Precise Orbit Determination Section at GMV

‘If I had to sum up Gigas’ service in a single sentence, I’d say that, on the one hand, it gives us the flexibility we need, the quality of service, and the professionalism of its technicians.’
