The underlying gap

Perception and reality do not match

El diagnóstico que atraviesa las tres áreas del estudio: los gestores se ven mejor preparados de lo que un análisis de sus pilares tecnológicos confirma.

  • Rates themselves 8-10 in digitalisation: 44%
  • Has genuine advanced digital maturity: 9% (based on the analysis of their technological foundations: cloud, cybersecurity, AI, and talent)
The self-perception of management teams holds up poorly when actual infrastructure is examined: management software that remains unmigrated, security measures restricted to the basics, and AI deployed without strategy. The following three sections show where this gap opens up.

01

Cloud: widespread use, but basic

The end of the server under the desk has not yet arrived
  • 66% already use the cloud, but mainly for email (40%) and backups (34%) — not for core business operations.
  • 52% maintain physical servers in their office. 35% believe this is "more secure".
  • 9% have migrated their ERP to the cloud. Only 12% manage their CRM in the cloud.
  • 62% do not know where their cloud provider stores their data, although 56% consider it key for data to be hosted within European territory.
02

Artificial intelligence: adoption without strategy

The employee uses it, not yet the company

Most used generative tool: ChatGPT 72% · Google Gemini 43% · Microsoft Copilot 23%.

03

Cybersecurity: protected on paper

Reactivity remains the weak point
  • 78% claim to have cybersecurity measures, but these are limited to standard antivirus and firewalls (54%).
  • 36% have advanced protection: EDR, next-generation firewall, or cyber insurance.
  • 8% suffered a cyberattack in the last 12 months — 21% among medium-sized companies.
  • 31% of those affected incurred the cost of recovering data or paying a ransom; 21% had their business operations halted.
04

Digital talent: the bottleneck

The problem is identified, but no action is taken
  • 44% consider that the lack of profiles with digital skills is a major or primary barrier to innovation.
  • 67% have neither conducted nor planned any technology training for their team in the last year, despite identifying it as their greatest obstacle.

2026 Barometer data by autonomous community

Andalusia:
Commercial dynamism exposed to risk

sanidad pública cloud

Andalusian SMEs demonstrate an excellent disposition towards innovation: they stand 5 percentage points above the national average in AI adoption (41%) and lead technology investment forecasts for the coming months, with 43% willing to increase their budget for advanced solutions. Furthermore, they are the best at perceiving the return on their digital efforts, with 70% stating that using the cloud brings them clear cost efficiencies.

However, they present a critical vulnerability: 14% of Andalusian SMEs suffered a cyberattack in the last year, which is almost double the national average and creates an urgent need to transition from basic security to managed protection strategies.

Catalonia:
Traditional infrastructure and concern for data

Imagen puerto Barcelona

The Catalan business framework reflects solid operational maturity, but carries a cultural resistance to abandoning local infrastructure: 57% of its SMEs remain tied to physical on-premise servers. This persistence is driven by apprehension surrounding cloud storage: 31% highlight concerns over data security and privacy as their primary barrier to migration.

Additionally, the Catalan corporate ecosystem faces an imminent regulatory challenge: 47% of companies are at risk of non-compliance regarding the new mandatory requirements of the Anti-Fraud Law and the Verifactu system.

Basque Country:
Structural cloud and low advanced protection

admon pública cloud

Basque SMEs stand out for a deeply operational approach to digitalisation, leading the migration of core business operations to cloud environments: 40% effectively host a critical process (such as billing, CRM, or ERP) in the cloud (7 percentage points above the national average). They also demonstrate strong local ties, with 29% prioritising the hiring of local or national suppliers over large foreign corporations.

However, they display markedly reactive behaviour regarding digital security: barely 15% possess advanced cybersecurity tools (compared to 36% nationwide), entrusting their security to conventional antivirus software.

Valencian Community:
Commercial maturity and AI strategy

admon pública cloud

The Valencian Community stands out for a smart and focused integration of technology into the business sphere: 50% of SMEs using AI apply it directly in Marketing and Sales, an excellent figure that exceeds the Spanish average by 12 percentage points.

This commercial digitalisation is supported by a solid foundation of technical trust, recording the highest level of trust in cloud providers in the study, with 95% of SMEs feeling secure regarding the data protection provided by their main partner.

Territorial comparison

How the autonomous communities are progressing

Four very distinct profiles. The comparison uses the cost efficiency that each region perceives when using the cloud against the national average (63%), as it is the only metric available across all four autonomous communities and nationally.

Conclusions

Roadmap to closing the gap

  • Industrialising AI: moving from individual, free usage to corporate licences integrated into management software.
  • Migrating the core business: on-premise servers are no safer; the cloud is currently the only environment capable of withstanding an incident without halting operations.
  • Investing in the existing team: upskilling the current workforce in digital skills is faster and more cost-effective than recruiting scarce profiles from the market.
  • Relying on an end-to-end partner: cloud, cybersecurity, and AI are no longer managed separately when working with a single trusted technology partner.
